2024 Tax Return Checklist: Everything You Need to Get Started

The 31st of January deadline for your 2024 tax return is nearly here! Here’s a handy checklist to make the process as smooth as possible:

1. Check if You Need to Submit a Tax Return

– Use the tool on the gov.uk website to see if you’re required to file.
– If you received income outside of PAYE, such as self-employment, rental, or investment income, you’ll likely need to submit one.

2. Gather Your Documents

Ensure you have the following ready:
– Your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) and National Insurance number.
– Details of all income earned between 6th April 2023 and 5th April 2024.
– Records of allowable expenses (e.g., business costs, professional fees).
– P60s or P45s for employment income.
– Bank interest statements, dividend vouchers, or investment income details.
– Rental income and expense records, if applicable.

3. Claim Any Reliefs or Allowances

– Include pension contributions or charitable donations that qualify for tax relief.
– If applicable, check if you qualify for the marriage allowance or other reliefs.

4. Submit and Pay on Time

– File your tax return online by 31st January 2025.
– Ensure any tax owed is paid by the same date to avoid penalties and interest.
